New SEAI Grants: Up to €9,000 for Solar Panels & Battery Storage Grants

7 min read

There's great news for Irish homeowners! The Government has announced a range of new and enhanced SEAI solar grants as part of its latest energy affordability measures and Budget 2027, making it easier and more affordable for households across Ireland to make the switch to solar energy.

From a brand-new €600 battery storage grant to enhanced solar PV funding of up to €9,000 for eligible households, the latest changes could make a significant difference for homeowners looking to reduce their electricity bills.

There's also good news for those living in newer homes, with the standard €1,800 solar PV grant now available to more properties than ever before.

The new measures were confirmed in autumn 2026, with the enhanced SEAI supports taking effect from 6 October 2026.

So, what's changed, who qualifies, and how much could you save? Let's take a closer look at everything Irish homeowners need to know about the latest solar grants.

1. New €9,000 SEAI Solar Grant for Eligible Households

One of the biggest announcements is the introduction of an enhanced SEAI solar PV grant worth up to €9,000 for homeowners receiving certain qualifying Department of Social Protection payments.

This new support is designed to make solar energy more accessible to households that may previously have found the upfront cost of installing solar panels too expensive.

Under the enhanced scheme, eligible homeowners can receive:

  • Up to €8,400 towards solar PV panels for a system of up to 4kWp.

  • An additional €600 towards battery storage with a minimum capacity of 5kWh.

  • A combined maximum grant of €9,000, subject to eligibility and scheme requirements.

For qualifying households, this could cover a substantial portion of the cost of installing a solar PV and battery system, and potentially the full eligible installation cost in some cases.

Who Qualifies for the €9,000 Solar Grant?

The enhanced grant is available to homeowners receiving certain Department of Social Protection payments, including:

  • Fuel Allowance under the National Fuel Scheme.

  • Working Family Payment.

  • One-Parent Family Payment.

  • Domiciliary Care Allowance.

  • Carer's Allowance, where the recipient lives with the person they care for.

  • Jobseeker's Allowance, where the recipient has been receiving the payment for more than six months and has a child under seven.

  • Disability Allowance, where the recipient has been receiving the payment for more than six months and has a child under seven.

Additional eligibility requirements apply, and receiving one of these payments does not automatically guarantee approval.

How Much Could You Save?

Solar panels allow you to generate your own renewable electricity during daylight hours, reducing the amount of electricity you need to purchase from your energy supplier.

When combined with battery storage, excess electricity generated during the day can be stored and used later in the evening.

According to Government estimates, a suitable 4kWp solar PV system with battery storage could help households save up to €878 per year on electricity bills.

Of course, every home is different, and the amount you save will depend on factors such as your electricity usage, roof orientation and system size.

2. New €600 SEAI Battery Storage Grant

Another exciting development is the introduction of a brand-new €600 SEAI grant for home battery storage systems.

Previously, homeowners could receive Government support towards installing solar panels, but there was no separate standard SEAI grant for battery storage. The new grant provides €600 towards an eligible battery storage system with a capacity of at least 5kWh.

Why Add a Battery to Your Solar PV System?

Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, but many households use a significant amount of their electricity in the evenings, when the sun has gone down.

Without battery storage, any excess solar electricity that isn't used immediately is typically exported to the electricity grid.

A battery allows you to store some of that excess electricity and use it later when your household needs it.

This means you can:

  • Use more of the electricity you generate rather than purchasing it from the grid.

  • Power your home in the evenings using stored solar energy.

  • Reduce your reliance on electricity suppliers and fluctuating energy prices.

  • Make better use of your solar PV system throughout the day and night.

The new €600 grant is available to eligible homeowners installing a battery alongside a new solar PV system.

Homeowners with existing solar panels can also apply for the battery grant separately, provided they meet the relevant eligibility requirements.

This is particularly good news for anyone who previously installed solar panels without a battery and has been considering adding storage.

3. Standard €1,800 Solar PV Grant Remains Available

There is also good news for homeowners who don't qualify for the enhanced €9,000 solar grant.

The standard SEAI solar PV grant remains available, offering up to €1,800 towards the installation of solar panels.

The amount of grant funding depends on the size of your solar PV system.

Solar PV System Size

Maximum SEAI Grant

2kWp

€1,400

3kWp

€1,600

4kWp or larger

€1,800

With the introduction of the new €600 battery storage grant, eligible homeowners installing both solar panels and a battery could now receive up to €2,400 in combined SEAI grant support.

This helps reduce the initial investment while allowing homeowners to benefit from generating their own electricity for years to come.

4. Solar Grants Now Available to More Irish Homes

Another important change is the expansion of eligibility for the standard SEAI solar PV grant.

Previously, the grant was generally limited to homes built and occupied before 2021.

Under the new rules, homes built and occupied before 2025 are now eligible to apply.

This means thousands of homeowners living in newer properties may now qualify for financial assistance towards installing solar panels.

If you've previously considered solar PV but discovered your home was too new to qualify for the grant, it may be worth checking again!

The updated eligibility criteria also apply to the new battery storage grant. Other SEAI conditions continue to apply, including requirements relating to previous grant funding, registered contractors and approval before installation.

5. More Support for Solar PV Installations in Irish Businesses

Under the enhanced SEAI Non-Domestic Microgeneration Grant scheme, support has increased from approximately 23% to 45% of eligible solar PV installation costs for a temporary nine-month period.

The enhanced funding is available for new applications made from 6 October 2026 until 6 July 2027, making this a particularly attractive opportunity for businesses considering solar energy.

The scheme supports commercial solar PV systems up to 1,000kWp, with the maximum grant of €325,200 available for the largest qualifying installations. The actual grant amount depends on the system size and eligible installation costs.

For businesses with significant daytime electricity consumption, solar PV can be a particularly worthwhile investment.

Generating electricity on-site can help businesses reduce operating costs, improve energy independence and protect themselves against future electricity price increases.

With increased financial support available for a limited time, businesses considering solar PV may want to explore their options sooner rather than later.

6. Higher Tax-Free Allowance for Selling Excess Solar Electricity

Another positive change for solar homeowners under Budget 2027 is an increase in the income tax exemption for electricity sold back to the grid.

Previously, qualifying homeowners could receive up to €400 annually in microgeneration income without paying income tax on that amount.

Under Budget 2027, this threshold has increased to €600 per year. This is particularly beneficial for homeowners who generate more solar electricity than they use.

Through Ireland's Clean Export Guarantee, eligible solar PV owners can receive payments from their electricity suppliers for surplus electricity exported to the grid.

While the amount earned depends on your electricity supplier's export rate and how much electricity you export, the increased tax exemption means qualifying households can receive more income before income tax becomes payable. It's another financial benefit worth considering when investing in solar panels.

7. Is Now a Good Time to Install Solar Panels in Ireland?

With the introduction of new grants and expanded eligibility, there's plenty of good news for homeowners who have been considering solar energy.

The combination of Government financial support, long-term electricity savings and the ability to generate your own renewable electricity makes solar PV an increasingly attractive investment.

Here are some of the main reasons homeowners are making the switch:

Lower Electricity Bills

Generate your own electricity during daylight hours and reduce the amount you need to purchase from your energy supplier.

Greater Energy Independence

Producing your own electricity means relying less on the grid and having greater control over your household energy costs.

Battery Storage Options

Store excess solar electricity for use later in the day, helping you make better use of the energy your panels generate.

Government Grant Support

With standard combined grants of up to €2,400 for eligible solar PV and battery installations, and enhanced support of up to €9,000 for qualifying households, the upfront investment could be significantly reduced.

Long-Term Savings

Solar panels are designed to generate electricity for decades, providing long-term financial benefits while helping reduce your household's carbon footprint.

Another common question we hear from homeowners is whether solar panels are really effective in Ireland's unpredictable climate. The good news is that solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not just direct sunshine. Find out more in our article Do Solar Panels Really Work in Irish Weather?
